Slew
What Is Slew?
A slew limiter (or glide, or portamento) smooths out abrupt voltage changes over time. Instead of instantly jumping between values, the signal ramps up or down at a set rate. You can apply slew to pitch, modulation, or anything you want to feel more fluid.
Two Flavors
- Glide / Portamento: Slew applied to pitch – great for legato notes or slides between steps.
- Slew Limiting: Applied to any CV signal, not just pitch. Think filter sweeps, envelope-like curves, or soft-edged randomness.
Use It For:
- Pitch slides between notes
- Smoothing out stepped modulation (like Sample & Hold)
- Creating contour shapes without full envelopes
- Making modulation more “musical” and less robotic
Even subtle slew can make a patch feel more expressive. Great for adding glide, slop, or chill to otherwise snappy control signals.
